How do I begin?
Well, first of all we need some cards to learn. There are three options to create a new card collection:
- Import a collection from the Internet (at the moment from StudyStack or FlashcardExchange)
- Import a collection from a CSV file
- Manually create cards
Import a collection from the Internet is the fastest way to get new cards. Working with a CSV file assumes a special import from the phone’s SDCard. This way is practicable if we wont to use our existing cards in other format by export them to a CSV file. And last option, create cards directly on the smartphone is really for hardcore users
. I wouldn’t recommend this way to create a new collection from the scratch. In this way we can anytime modify an existing collection, add a couple of new cards, change some existings (e.g. insert an image) or probably remove unnecessary one.
Ok, let’s assume we are ready, we have a card collection on the smartphone. What next ? Next, we want to decide what learning system we want to use. There are two possible systems [Link zu System Einstellungen]:
- Leitner (Wikipedia)
- Standard.
What does it mean? What is the difference between both systems ? Well, basically the Leitner system cotrols the whole learning flow. The system selects cards, builds a queue, shows us the queue and repeat the process according to some intern rules. The Standard system is the opposite of the Leitner system – we have to organise the whole process by ourself. To facilitate this method the app makes available many help options: tags for building cards groups, sorting the collection by different criteria, a reminder and so on.
The Leitner system is setted by default.
Ok, the next step is ….. right ! Learn ! How do I learn with the JetMemo app ? There are some modes approachable:
- Preview
- Show an answer
- Enter an answer
- Multiple choice
- Blind
The default one is the Preview mode. In this mode we see both sites of a card simultaneously. This mode is helpful for familiarization with a selected collection.
The mode “Show an answer” shows us only one side of a card and let us give a simple answer “Yes” if we mind our answer was correct and “No” if not
The third mode “Enter an answer” is the strictest one. Here we have to type our answer. However, to arrange the mode a little bit easier there are some options that let us to control the differ to the original answer.
The mode “Multiple Choice” let us to choose a right answer. It’s the easiest one and is one of my preferred modes
.
Well, and the last one is the “Blind” mode. In this mode we can learn cards without looking on our smartphone. A questined word is read (via Text to Speech) and we decide whether you are right by taping on the screen. One tap is “Yes, correct”, two taps is “No, incorrect”. It’s very simple
In all modes except “Preview” a stats for all [in]correct answers is being accomplished. That means we can anytime see our progress, we can even publish our success scores !
What do parts of the card’s screen mean?
Well, the whole cards screen is divided into differents parts. Site A, Site B, stats field and drag stripper.
The stats field on the screen above means:
- There are 3 cards in the learnig session and the current card has the number 2
- 60 % of all answers to this card were succesfull
- The card was answered 5 times
- The current mode is A to B
Additionally to navigate buttons on the bottom there is an drag strip in the middle, we can turn cards by dragging the strip to the left or to the right.
If the strip just bother us we can disable it in the options
What does Leitner System mean?
A good description of the Leitner system can be found on Wikipedia
JetMemo creates per default 6 boxes. Each box has three important settings:
- how long (at least) should a card be in the box
- how many times (at least) has the card being answered before moving to an other box
- what is the minimal success quote to move the card to the next box
All boxes and their settings are configurable, that means we can any time change the settings for our own needs.
Basically on the Leitner system are only 2 points to consider. How to select the cards (to build a queue for the current learn session) and how to move the cards among the boxes. Both points and their implementation in JetMemo can be described with help of following diagrams:
How do I change Leitner boxes settings?
Well, we understand the Leitner System and we want to customise settings for the Leitner boxes. First of all we have to show the settings screen:
With a long tap we can edit the box.
There are some options to set fill:
- Box name. It’s what you see as tag name
- Age. How much days has the card be in the box. That means after this time period the card can be moved to an other box
- Attempts. How many times (at least) should the card be answered in the time period.
- Success. Min. success score to be moved to an other box
Let us consider the following box settings:
- Age: 7
- Attempts: 2
- Success: 50%
That means a card remains in the box min 7 days. After this period of time the card can be answered. After 2 attempts it is decided what will happen with the card. If the card was correct answered for min 50% (2 attempts, at least 1 should be correct) the card will be moved to the next box (e.g. 14 days). If not, the card was not correct answered for 50% the card will be moved to the first box ! However we can interfere to this process and assign a Leitner box to a card manually.
Finally sometimes land our cards in the Box Archiv. In this Box cards can not be asked, this is the secure place to keep the cards. However you can each time manually remove some or all cards from the Archive Box to some other box.
What does Standard System mean?
The Standard system allows us to control the whole learning process. That means we create our own goups of cards. Each time we’re learning we select a suitable group (or groups). During the learn session we can change (according to our results) the groups of a card.
Let’s consider a following example. We create 4 tags (groups)
- very difficult
- current
- later
- done
and assign all our cards to the tag “current”. To begin a learn session we select the tag “current” and during the session we assign some cards to other tags (either “very difficult” or “later” or “done”). Next time we can repeat e.g only “very difficult” or “later” group of cards.
As additional help the tags within the group can be sorted, so we can say, ok, I want to learn cards from the group “current” with the worst stats at the beginning. Or I repeat quickly cards I can at best (sorting by the best stats), and so on.
Mode Standard. I would like to select a learn session by tags
Well, before each session begins we can actually choose the cards by some tags . The next time we are starting our session we have to repeate the same procedure – select cards by tags and so on. JetMemo gives us the possibility to save our last tags’ choice. And this situation is per default setted (the tag “all cards” is selected) after a first app installation. To change the default selection we have to make following steps:
Menu->Settings->Tab System->Reset tags selection.
That is, at the beginnig of the session we can now select the tags
And at last we can save our last tags selection, that means at the next session start we are not being asked to choose tags.
Menu->Save tags selection.
How do I import a card’s collection from StudyStack?
To import from StudyStack we need to do following steps: Start view-> Import -> Import from StudyStack

How do I import a card’s collection from FlashcardExchange?
To import from FlashcardExchange we need to do following steps: Start view-> Import -> Import from FlashcardExchange
Here we have to input either an registered email (on the FlashcardExchange) address or a search word. In the first case we get an access to all profile’s internal cards collections, in the second case we get the search results (if any).
That is !
How do I create and import a card’s collection from a CSV file?
We create a CSV file and copy it to any location on our SDCard. The file extension has to be “.jmemocsv”, for example “mycards.jmemocsv”.
Further explanations for the structure of a CSV file are:
- Each line in the file represents a card
- Each line contents columns for the card fields
- The separator of the columns is a ; (semicolon)
- Content of each column is optional, that means a column could be emtpy, but don’t forget to separate the empty columns with a ;
- Sequence of fields for the single line:
- word A
- word B
- note A
- note B
- path to an image A
- path to an image B
- path to an audio file A
- path to an audio file B
Here there are a couple of example lines:
Live;Leben;
Sun;Sonne;Using of the sun;;/sdcard/img/1.png;/sdcard/img/2.png;/sdcard/audio/dog.mp3;/sdcard/auido/motor.wav
Flyer;Flieger;;;/sdcard/img/4.png;/sdcard/img/4.png;/sdcard/audio/motor.wav
In the file above we have 3 cards, the site A is market as bold text
To import a CVS file we need to do following steps: Start view-> Import -> Import from FlashcardExchange

How do I backup my current collection?
Sometimes we may need to backup a collection (bought a new phone or share the collection with a friend). There is only one step to do it:
Start view->Menu->Backup
The backuped collection is putted onto our SDCard under the path (if the path does not exist it gets created):
/sdcard/JetMemo/backup/main_[Date]_[Time].jmemo
How do I select an other card’s collection?
If we have backuped or get shared some collections from a friend we could use this collection as a current one.
Start view->Select collection
Here we see all existed JetMemo collections on the phone. The collection with the red icon is the current used collection.
By long tap on the collection item the context menu appears. If we choose the menu “Select collection” the collection gets our current collection. However we can use the menu “Copy to phone” too. That means the collectiot gets copied from the SDCard to the phone memory and gets our current collection.
By short tap on the collection item the following dialog appears. If we confirm the diaolg the selected collection gets our current collection.
How do I add a new card to my collection?
There are many entry points for this action. One of them is Start view-> Edit collection->Menu->Add card
Here we can add a word for the site A
Here we can add a note for the site A
Here we can add an image for the site A
And here we can assign an existing audio file for the site A
the same procedure can be done for the site B, we have only to switch the button
However we can use the advantage of an automatic translation to tranlate site A to B. Assumed the languages are setted for the both sites and both languages are supported by the google translation engine.
and voila !

How is the mode “Preview” to use?
In Preview mode we see both sites of a card simultaneously. This mode is helpful for familiarization with a selected collection. Optionally we can use an autoflipper, so the cards are shown automatically. Additionally we can set up the Text To Speech features for both card’s sites.
Autoflip preview
Additionally we can start / stop flipping during the autoflip preview
How is the mode “Blind” to use?
Well, first of all we have to set up some useful options for this mode:
- Mode “Blind”
- Languages for A and/or B site if we are going to use Text To Speech
- Auto speack for A and/or B word
- After card evaluation, automatically open the next card
The options are optional and I mentioned before it’s very useful for “blind” mode. To answer a card by we have to tap on the screen:
- One tap – success
- Two taps – failure
And now we can just take the smartphone into the pocket and start the learning on an card’s collection. The next card will be automatically opened, we have to listen to the next asked word, tap our answer and the the game begins again !
How do I change the layout of a card ?
If you’re a little bit familiar with HTML you can customise the layout of the card.
In this window you see the current used layout’s template. There are some things to note:
- jetword is the placeholder for a word
- jetnote is the placeholder for a notice
- jetimg is the placeholder for an image
- jetimgaudio is the placeholder for an audio image
That is ! Change the layout, save it, restart your learning session and you should see you own layout !
If you have trouble with your layout and don’t know what to do, you can reset the setting to the original layout.
